Applesauce in jar

Crockpot Applesauce

Who needs a Glade plug-in when you have the sweet smell of homemade cinnamon applesauce slow cooking in the kitchen?? Seriously, one of the best smells!

We went to Homestead Farm out in Poolesville, Maryland to pick our own apples and pick out a pumpkin, because that’s just what you do this time of year. And if that’s not the way you celebrate fall, then what exactly do you do? Really, fill me in. I’d love to know if there is something more fall than apple and pumpkin picking, cause I would probably be ALL about it!

Apples on cutting board

Anyways, we went a bit overboard when it came to the apple picking, as most people do. Hence, the creation of this wonderfully simple fall recipe! This applesauce has very little added sugar and very few ingredients, which is exactly how applesauce should be. Fuji and pink lady apples work great – you can also do a combination of the two.

Sliced apples and spices

Not a fan of eating applesauce all by its lonesome? Let me share some of the fun ways you can use this applesauce:

  • Serve warm over a scoop of vanilla ice cream (add some granola or toasted nuts for crunch)
  • Fancy up your morning bowl of oatmeal
  • Apple pie filling? Um, yes.
  • Add a dollop onto your Saturday morning waffles or mix into your favorite pancake batter

This applesauce is sounding better and better, isn’t it!

Ingredients

  • 10 apples (about 3.5 pounds)
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Peel and slice apples, removing the skin and the core. Be sure all seeds are thrown away as well.
  2. Dump all ingredients into the crockpot and set the temperature on low for 3 hours.
  3. After 3 hours, use a potato masher to mash the apple slices into a sauce. The apples should break down very easily at this point. Mash your apples to the desired consistency and enjoy warm or cold!
